Confession

Confession: Jude still drinks out of bottles.  I really did try putting his milk in his sippy cups for awhile, but getting Jude to drink whole milk has been heck.  I tried a little spoon of sugar, but that was hit or miss.  I tried chocolate, but I really hated the idea of giving it to him.  I tried it in sippy cups and that was out and out refused.

Then I discovered 1 drop of vanilla.  And Jude looooooooooves it.  I think he would drink milk all day like this.  But he won't drink it out of a sippy cup.  So it becomes one of those things where you debate whether to listen to what the doctor says or do what seems to work for your child.  At the end of the day, I want my child to drink milk.  And for now, this works.  We'll try taking the sippy cup another day.

Hey Ashley...as far as the bottles go I wouldn't worry or feel bad. Colby had bottles until 18 months. I would just try to make him use the sippy cup for one milk feeding a day...I started with Colby in the morning b/c he would be the most thirsty then I would give him milk with his breakfast and nothing else so he would eventually drink it...it might take him a few hours to drink the whole thing but he would...he was the same way never wanted whole milk in a cup it was a struggle at first...once I got him used to driniking it in the morning I did the same in the afternoon. We took away his nap bottle first then bedtime. He eventually went to drinking milk just 2 times a day which is what he does now...once in the morning and once in the afternoon. Although now most of the milk he gets is flavored...I wouldn't feel too horrible about that either I mean get him used to the whole milk but I think chocolate or flavored is ok some of the time. You are doing a great job!

Hey Ashley Alex had his bottle until he was 2 years 3 months (maybe 4 months) I didn't care what people said or thought it made him happy and to me he was still a baby to me! He only needed it to go to bed....you do what your gut tells you ultimately he is YOUR SON! And if it bothers anyone oh well let it bother them!

Agreed Letty. One thing I've realized about myself as a parent is that I am not a) that tough nor b) good about sticking to rules. I just am not interested in a fight. I just don't want to make him a big baby later on...

yeah, he'll get it eventually. Are you nursing at all anymore? I had a tough time with Jax too (but since he rarely got bottles, he wouldnt even drink it from that) Thankfully, he'll take it from his sippy now (but only a specific one haha, kids are so funny) What ended up working for him was heating the milk up. I hate that I have to warm it for him, but at least he drinks it, and he'll guzzle it too. Eventually I guess I'll make it less and less warm until its just flat out cold. Maybe adding some flavor will help the transition though... good idea! I think the first successful all whole milk feeding for Jax was for his post nap milk... it was when he was the hungriest and most willing, I guess. Oh, and I mixed breastmilk with whole in the beginning too....

He does still breastfeed every night and most mornings. Once I let him take it from a bottle with a drop of vanilla warmed, he's been obsessed with whole milk. It just took finding what worked for him. Eventually, I suppose we will begin transitioning to sippy cups/non flavored/ cold/whatever. I don't know when that will be though. I know its not dr recommended, but I don't know that I care...

Be careful giving him chocolate at such a young age. My son had an allergic reaction at age 2 (which is still young for chocolate) and had to go to the ER. There are just certain things you should not be giving your child until age 2 or 3. He now does fine with chocolate.

Chocolate has caffeine in it as well.
