On My Heart

Motherhood has been on my heart a lot here lately.  I think it's because of this {extremely} convicting study I've been doing on 1 Peter via this book.  I'm not even sure why of all things it has convicted me in this area as motherhood is not the point of the book.  I think mainly it's just how I can come home from work exhausted- and that looks anything but gentle sometimes.

In my diligence to be a Light on my campus as well as the best teacher I can be to my students, I sometimes feel like I'm burning my candle at both ends.  I can end up forgetting to keep the most important things the most important.  More than anything else, that smile is my mission.  How often do I really train him and teach him who Christ is?  Sure he sees my example- he knows I go into my office and read my Bible.  But do I really teach Jude who Christ is, sadly not often.

I desperately want to change this.  I want to be the kind of mom who raises godly men (and maybe women someday).  Last week, my pastor talked about the judgement of the saints- when Christians will have to answer for how we used the talents and gifts He's given us for His kingdom.  I do think I faithfully use those things in my workplace, but I am sadly lacking in my home.  As a Christian mother, I think my main calling is raising godly children.  My home is supposed to be a place where the Holy Spirit dwells in everything.  During the summer, it is so much easier for me to sing hymns and read the Bible with Jude.  During the school year, those things are the first to fall to wayside.

What should a Christian working mother's home look like?

This is the question I'm asking myself currently.  I won't even begin to act like I have an idea.  I am praying that God grow me into that place and show me what it should look like.

I've also been *painfully, painfully* aware of how quick these seasons fade.  Jude's interests are becoming more and more 'big boy ish' every day.  Less and less toddlerish.  He's already 4 years old, and I cry inside every night I realize there are so many moments I just can't get back.  Right now, he's still very attached to 'momma'.  But time is running out on me.  The time of nurturing and teaching him is now.  His brain is active and aware and able to make connections.  He respects me and believes me.  If I don't teach him truth now, I'm going to lose the opportunity to ever teach him.  It's sobering and scary, and honestly breaks my heart.  I miss my little baby.

And so this Christmas, we are starting some new traditions, particularly with Advent.  I want Emmanuel, God with us to be part of our daily conversation.  I don't know how you convey the intimacy of the incarnation to a 4 year old, but I want to try.  I want to light the advent wreath every night.  We are going to read devotionals after dinner.  I want to prepare my heart to receive Him, but I also want to teach Jude how to receive Him.  The significance of this holiday is so easily lost amidst the hustle and bustle of black Friday deals and lists, lists, and more lists.  Yet none of those matter in the midst of eternity.  This holiday is about focusing on things unseen that one day, when you least expect it- in a way you never would have expected, the unseen becomes God with us.  What we hoped for becomes tangible.  The deepest longings of our heart are filled in Him.

Motherhood.  The greatest calling.  Even in the incarnation, you have the greatest calling of raising Christ Himself.  And it all centers on having palms open, receiving whatever gifts He bestows on you with thankfulness and humility.  But also dedication and endurance.  A willingness to follow His lead when it seems dangerous (being attacked by Herod) or doesn't make any sense (Joseph marrying a girl who appears tainted).

Oh how I pray that Jude will understand the significance of this season....

The son, the son! Tradition!

As a little girl, one of my favorite holiday memories was making cookies with my mom.  My absolute favorite part of it was eating the dough, which had a delightful nutmeg flavor.  To this day I am still obsessed with using nutmeg, especially in pancakes.  Yum!

I had wanted to try to start this similar type tradition with Jude using gingerbread cookies.  (Incidently if anyone has a really good gingerbread recipe, please give it to me!  Every year I try a new one and am sadly disappointed...)  Anyway, Jude ended up with pink eye that day so I cut out and baked all the cookies by myself.  Maybe next year we can bake together....

Then I figured well, I can set aside some cookies for him to decorate.  He will just have to eat those cookies and make sure no one else does.  When I was a kid and was more patient and a perfectionist, I put insane amounts of effort into the decorating process.  And I do mean process.  I definitely didn't expect Jude to be as detailed....

He didn't even attempt it.  I stuck him up here with a few cookies.  He definitely went to town on them.  But not decorating them.  He just went to town eating them.  Toddlers :)

In fact, my neat freak child DID NOT LIKE the icing.  He tried to clean it off and greatly lamented getting his hands dirty.

This was all me.  And it was the closest we got to cookie decorating traditions this year.  Next year perhaps?

PS. I don't think I can say the word tradition without wanting to break out in song.  Thank you Fiddler on the Roof.

Update

Here is a little photo/update on Jude as of late.  Have I mentioned before that I love 2 year olds?  I seriously do.  He's so much more fun nowadays.  Plus, its lovely to be able to verbally communicate with him.  It's usually pretty funny too!

Here is Jude talking on the phone perhaps?  Can't remember.  Sometimes he just is adorable and rests his hand against his face.

Jude has started saying 'cheese' for the camera when he sees me trying to take pictures of him.  This is pretty cute.  I'm not sure when I taught him to say that.  He seems to pick up everything these days, even if it happens 1 time.  The problem is that he doesn't say cheese in a way that creates a smile.  I get this goofy teethy look.

At least its still cute :)

Jude is too cool.  Somethings he is into saying these days:

* ice berries, ice juice, ice fruit- if it is made of fruit, it will have ice in front of it
* surprise!
* love you too mom :)
* woo hoo!
* my belly screen (belly)
* singing twinkle twinkle little star, spider in the rain, bubble song from yo gabba gabba
* A couple days ago we went to look at some Christmas trains.  When I told Jude about it, he says "Wow! That-Is-Great!"  And then when I reminded him we needed to get ready to go see the trains he said, "ok! sweet!"

He's a lot of fun.  I think I could stop time right here and keep him 2 years old forever.  Think I'll get that for Christmas?

O Christmas Tree

Our 2011 Christmas Tree:  I seriously love Christmas trees.  And all of the cozy traditions that come with Christmas.  I love winter and the chill of it all.  Which is why my Christmas tree will be up at least until the end of January.  For years, I mourned the day we took the tree down.  As I got my own tree I adopted the New Orleans don't take anything down until Janurary 6th tradition.  But in the last couple years, I realized to heck with it.  I'm an adult and can make my own decisions.  If I want to leave my tree up alllllll winter long, who can stop me.  No one!  I mean does it even make sense that we celebrate Christmas at the beginning of winter?  Why didn't the genius who picked December 25th pick a day in the dreariest part of winter when we really need something to be excited about.  Then we wouldn't feel so rushed between Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, we would have all winter to savor the magic, and light be shining even when the days were cold and dark.  Seriously, if I ran the world....  But I do run my house- and this tree you see will be up through January.

Christmas Card

Below are the picks that I currently have that I like enough to possibly use on our Christmas card.  I had wanted to get my sis to take pics of me and Jude this past weekend, but that didn't happen.  After getting my first Christmas card in the mail yesterday (thanks friend- you're baby is beautiful!) I am feeling the pressure to get them going!

I had wanted to put one pic of Jude by himself and one of the two of us.  So my question for YOU is

1) should I just go ahead and do wait till this weekend to get a better pic of me and Jude?

and

2) Which do you like of Jude- choice a, b, or c?

Thanks friends!

Choice A:  Out of the seat, but a cute smile.  Good shot of tree.

Choice B: Cute close up.

Choice C: Sitting incorrectly.  A laughing picture.  Tree shot not as good.

My favorite pics from Christmas

Jude got a Thomas the train ride from Santa.  He is so obsessed with this toy.  I now have all the songs memorized.

He also got some new cars.  He's learned how to say vroom vroom with them too.  Not sure when he picked that up...

One of the cars became a new 'ornament'.  Isn't Jude so sweet to help with the decorating?

Too sweet!

Momma loves Jude Pie- Christmas morning edition

Momma loves Jude Pie- Christmas outfits edition

More of the same

Sorry, I was trying to take good one for a frame...

Jude Bunyan- the lumberjack

More Christmas presents- Tip to new parents: I staggered Jude's presents alllllll day long.  Actually several days.  Jude would get overwhelmed by too many 'new' things.  He just wanted to enjoy what he had.  So I staggered them.  The reason this ended up being so awesome was anytime he was bored or being a 'toddler', I just gave him a new present.  Tantrum solved.

Play set- his other favorite thing

Aunt Jamie

Uncle Joel

Christmas Eve

On Christmas Eve, Jude gets to open one present.

Inside, it is always a special pair of Christmas pajamas.

This is a special tradition that I've started just for him.

Uncle Joel

Right now, I'm loving this picture of Jude and his Uncle Joel.

Fall in Houston... comes at Christmas....

Jude saw loads of fall leaves while we were at my parents.  Yes, this is 5 days before Christmas.  In Houston, fall leaves came then.

Where my parents live, there are loads and loads of trees.  In fact, their area is dubbed 'The Livable Forest'.  (so corny)  Anyway, Jude lived it up in those leaves.  In fact, there were several days while there that we spent walking up and down the path.  I think he liked the rustle his feet made through them more than anything.

Oh Jude, you're such a science dude!  I am in love with this picture!  In love!

White Christmas

Poor Jude, I am a Christmas movie junkie.  I'm also an old movie junkie (think black and white or technicolor).  So he saw all of the greats- Miracle on 34th Street, It's a Wonderful Life, It Happened On 5th Avenue, etc.  The only one he enjoyed was White Christmas.  Here he is totally in to the dancing.
